The main shutoff is the valve on your side of the water meter that turns off water to the whole house. It's usually where the water line comes in: the basement, a crawlspace, a utility room, or the garage. If your meter is inside, the main shutoff is usually close to it.
It's the valve you need when a pipe bursts, a water heater leaks, or a fixture has to come out. If you can't shut the main off in a burst, the water keeps running until someone shuts it off at the curb stop. Older gate valves (the round handle you turn several times) can seize or stop sealing over the years. A quarter-turn ball valve (a lever handle) is a common replacement.
If it won't turn by hand, don't put a wrench or a cheater bar on it. A seized valve can break and leak worse. Call us. If you need the water off right now and the main won't close, call your water utility to shut it off at the curb stop.
Drips at the stem or under the handle, when the valve is open or when it's closed, mean the valve isn't sealing. We fix the valve and the visible leak at it.
This is the one people miss. They turn the valve all the way, open a faucet, and it still trickles. The valve isn't sealing, and it won't fully protect the house in a burst.
A broken or stripped handle leaves you with no easy way to shut the water off. That's a good time to replace the valve.
We look at the valve first. Some leaks at the stem or packing can be repaired. A valve that's seized, won't seal, or has a broken handle usually gets replaced. We explain the options, tell you which one we'd do and why, and price it before we start. If the job changes once we're into it, we stop and talk first. That's the No Change Order Guarantee.
If reaching the valve means opening a wall or ceiling, the drywall and trim work afterward is done by the same company.
The Town of Windsor is replacing traditional water meters with new ones that report water use without manual readings and help the Town spot possible leaks and unusual use faster. Many Windsor meters are inside homes, so the Town's crew needs access.
Before your appointment, find your main shutoff and try it. If it's stuck, leaking, or doesn't fully stop the water, we can repair or replace it. If the new meter shows water use you can't explain, check toilets and visible fixtures first, then call us to fix what you find. Questions about the appointment or the meter go to the Town of Windsor. See our Windsor plumber page.
More fall prep is in how to keep pipes from freezing in Northern Colorado. If a house will sit empty all winter, see vacant home winterization.
